Australia Day Breakfast 2009

Amazing Astronomical Discoveries at Guide Breakfast Approximately 100 guests were entertained at the 10th Waratah Guides Australia Day Breakfast by Mr John Shobbrook. Mr Shobbrook spoke of the theme for 2009 International Year of Astronomy which is “The universe - Yours to Discover”. He led us through 5 Amazing Astronomical discoveries which were:
1: Stars are shaped more like an orange... therefore we should really sit an orange on our Christmas tree and in fact many back yards have Christmas trees growing all year round. (Also known as orange trees)
2: There is no such thing as shooting stars. Showing us 3 tiny pieces of meteorites.
3: Sun rise and sun sets are a fallacy - the fact is the earth rotates. So ponder that when you take your next romantic walk as the earth rotates away from the sun!
4: There is no such thing as sunlight... the Sun is a star. (And didn’t the starlight put out some heat on Australia Day!) Added to this amazing fact is that one of the stars out there is called Zubenelganubi! (There’s one for the spelling list and tongue twisters too!)
5: There is no such thing as moonlight... in fact the moon and planets don’t emit light they in fact reflect the sun’s starlight J
Mr Shobbrook left the guides with this message “Aim high and perhaps one day you will make your very own discovery to share with the world”
Councillor Mr Ron Sullivan presented Ellie Capewell with the shield for Waratah Guide of the 2008.
All present were fed a delicious cooked breakfast followed by lamingtons. Many thanks to all our guests, a fabulous team of cooks, waitresses, ‘washerupperers’, chair stackers and especially to Brown Owl (Bev Rayner) who coordinated all the willing workers and events of the day.

I wonder how many people will put an orange on top of their Christmas tree this year? Don’t forget slip, slop slap when next out in the star light!
